Its Tuesday What Are You Reading?

The book that I am reading is called ” The Secret Life of Bees by: Sue Monk Kidd”. I picked this book because I seen the movie a bunch of times and I heard the book is always better then the movie. So I said why not try since I have to read. This book is about a little girl named Lily Watson who was getting abused by her father and her mother passed away when she was younger.Lily runs away from her trash father with her nanny and meets three other women and the lady takes the little girl and her nanny in if she works with her in her beehive.

“Set in South Carolina during 1964, The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of a fourteen year old white girl, Lily Owens, whose life has been shaped around the blurred memory of the afternoon her mother was killed.” –

I didn’t get to far with the book and can’t wait to see what the differences are in the book and in the movie. The beginning of the book doesn’t have a lot of differences but I hope it does through out the rest of the story or I’m going to be very disappointed.I only read 21 pages so far out of 336.

I know that this book is going to be good because the movie was excellent.I liked all the characters in it and I like the meaning in the story.I hope the book is as great as the movie was.

Any ways I had a great weekend I went to see “Get Out” with my bestfriend. This movie was good and had a lot  of surprises through out the movie. I loved the movie but I don’t think it was I was thinking it was going to be.Everyone was raving about it and I don’t think it was that good.

Book Review on “The Help by:Kathryn Stockett”

The book The Help by:Kathryn Stockett has 464 pages and 34 chapters.

This book is about black maids that live in Jackson,Mississippi in the year 1962.Through out the book the works have always been feed up with some of there employers. There are three main characters Aibleen a black maid who works for Mrs. Leefolt, Minnie also a black maid who works for Miss Hilly’s and Skeeter Phelan a white woman who writes.

In the story Skeeter ask Aibleen a few questions on her job because Skeeter wants to write a news paper column.Aibleen was surprised because the way Skeeter was speaking and treating her was respectful and not down grading Skeeter was not racist and was not like the other white woman in Jackson.

Minnie has recently been fired from her job because her employer has accused her of steeling which is not true of course but this will spread around and will be very hard from MInnie to find another job.Long story short Minnie finds someone who hasn’t heard the rumor and gets the job making twice as much as she made before.

Through the story Skeeter comes to the idea where she wants to write a book on the maids lifes and shes going to need Aibleen and Minnies helps. Also other maids.

The women of the Junior League ,the white women that Aibleen and Minnie work for are apart of this group also Skeeter writes from there part in the paper. They are not very happy with this book when it gets out and published and things change I don’t want to spoil it for you guys.

I liked this book alot it shows what really was going on after the civil rights movement and that there was still rasim happening. The story is told from the workers prospective and I liked that a lot. There is also a movie on the book.

“He read this book called Invisible Man. When he done, he says he gone write down what it was like to be colored working for a white man in Mississippi.” (6.181)

“We ain’t… we ain’t doing civil rights here. We just telling stories like they really happen.” (14.169)

‘Your father’s right,’ she said. ‘Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy…but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.”

I’m reading “To Kill A Mockingbird”

I am reading the book “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee. This book has 281 pages. I started to read this book in High School but never finished it because I didn’t have enough time. This book is a classic book which everyone has probably read either in school or on there on. I took interest in this book because my teacher suggested it and also my mother said she had to read this book in school that’s how you know this book is kind of old. The cover of this book is not interesting at all and I wouldn’t have ever thought to pick it up and read it. The cover is very plain and boring. I still haven’t reached the main purpose of the book considering I just started the book but I hope it gets better because the beginning of this book is really boring and I keep losing interest. The only reason I am still reading this book I because of all the good reviews and a lot of people recommend this book. I will share with you all when I’m done reading if this is a good book to read or not. I also have heard there is a movie of this book and I can not wait to watch it. I love books that have movies so I can compare them.

“Remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” That was the only time I ever heard Atticus say it was a sin to do something, and I asked Miss Maudie about it.
“Your father’s right,” she said. “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy . . . but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.”

These two quotes caught my eye because it gave me a thought of what the book is about and why its called To Kill a Mockingbird.

Book Review on “The Outsiders” by: S.E Hinton pgs.192

Book Review on “The Outsiders” by: S.E Hinton pgs.192

“They grew up on the outside of society. They weren’t looking for a fight. They were looking to belong.”

The book The Outsiders is about a group of gang members who call themselves the Greasers. The Greasers get there name from there hair always being greased back. The main characters of this story are Ponyboy Curtis,Sodapop, and Darry and they are all apart of the Greaser gang. These are there nicknames of course and they’re all brothers.Ponyboy is the narrator of this story and Sodapop and him are tooken care of by the the oldest brother Darrel a.k.a Darry because they have recently lost there parents due to a automobile accident.

The Greasers have a rivalry with another gang who call themselves the Socials a.k.a the Socs. The greasers and the socs have always had a problem. The greasers are more of the poor group and the socs all have money and they live on opposite sides of the city.Every time they see one another they fight or try to kill each other. So you probably know whats going to happen. The greasers and the socs get into it and three of the socs end up dead. The police then accuse Ponyboy as one of the killers and he has to go to court. In court they realize that he does have a legal guardian and cause something else.

I really liked this book a lot.It kept me on my toes at all times I never knew what was going to happen next.It was very interesting because it was written by a teenager about teenagers.I didn’t know that things really happen like this within gangs and its all true that its kind of scary. This book also was mad into a movie.
This is a very mature book that has cursing in it.I wouldn’t recommend this book to kids under the age of 14 just because of what the book consist of.This book has a lot of character and it is actually very entertaining. I enjoy this book a lot and would read it again.

What am I reading?

The book that I am going to start to read tomorrow is “The Outsiders” by S.E Hinton . I haven’t started reading it yet because I am very busy and I haven’t had time.Honestly I really haven’t started to read it because I didn’t feel like reading yet.Reading isn’t really my thing. So the book has to be very interesting for me to even give it a try.I picked this book because my cousin told me it was a good book and we like most of the same things. So I said why not give it a try.

On the bright side I had a great weekend.I went to Atlanta, Georgia to see my God parents and god sister with my mom.We had a great time.We went to The Battle of the Bands. If you don’t know what that is its when HBCU marching bands compete.I never been before and it was really amazing. Neyo was even there to perform. There were so many people there. It took a lot for us to get there and it was extremely cold outside. My friend is a dancer at BCU and she was there performing in the Battle of the Bands so I got to see her.

After the Battle of the Bands we all went to dinner at this restaurant called Pappadeax. They serve seafood which is really good.If you ever go to Atlanta go there there food is amazing. We all enjoyed dinner and had lots of good laughs.

I love Atlanta a lot and I never realized even though Ive been there a thousand times.I actually am thinking about moving there for school.I think I would enjoy it a lot and it would open a lot of opportunities for me considering that I am a dancer.Plus I really want to go to medical school in Atlanta. Hopefully Emory since my God mom works there.

Book Review on “Holes by: Louis Sachar” 225 pages

In the book Holes by Louis Sachar a young man by the name of Stanley Yelnats who is in his teens is accused of stealing a pair of tennis shoes, and has to go to court.”Stanley was not a bad kid. He was innocent of the crime for which he was convicted. He’d just been in the wrong place at the wrong time”.The court then sends Stanley to a boys juvenile detention center called “Camp Green Lake”. Camp Green Lake sounds really good doesn’t, by the way there is no lake its been dry for over a hundred years. At the camp the boys had to dig a hole 5 feet deep each day, hits the title Holes. The warden told the boys that digging builds character which Stanley was a lie.He knew they had to be digging for something and he was going to find out which he did.

This is a great book I actually found a lot of interest in this book unlike others I have read recently. There is a lot of surprises in the book that I was shocked about.

There wasn’t anything I didn’t like about this book.It was easy to read, very clear so I could understand and very entertaining. A lot of kids have read this book or should have in my opinion. A lot of people have told me about his book and how good it was that’s why I decided to finally pick it up and give and it a  try. I would say this book is probably my favorite book now by far.

I would recommend this book to kids in the fourth grade and up. There is a little fowl language but it is very easy to understand. Holes has also gotten a “John Newberry Metal”. That how you know its a great book.
